València joins the project to be among the European climate-friendly cities by 2030

On September 8th, Joan Ribó, Mayor of València, will sing a commitment with the Ministry for Environmental Transition so that València participates, together with the other three largest cities in Spain, in the network of climate-friendly cities, a project of the European Union.

This has been announced by the Mayor, who highlighted that the city is already making progress in this challenge thanks to Missions València 2030.

“València wants to be one of the spearhead cities in the fight against climate change in Europe”.

Among other actions already in place, Ribó recalled that the City Council, with the support of the València Climate and Energy Foundation and the Municipal Innovation Centre Las Naves, has launched an international call (open until September 5th) for projects oriented at the Neutral City Mission with a budget of € 100,000.

Joan Ribó informed that he would participate in the meeting “Spanish Cities before the challenge of Climate Neutrality”, organised by the Ministry of Environmental Transition. This meeting will conclude with the signature of the agreement between the Government and the city councils of València, Barcelona, Madrid, and Seville. The goal of the meeting is to exchange initiatives, difficulties and experiences that have been implemented and those in planning in order to face the challenges faced when moving towards urban sustainability and climate neutrality. This action is linked to the European project “100 Climate-neutral cities by 2030”.

The Mayor of València explained that cities, “despite covering only 3% of the world surface, represent 72% of greenhouse gas emissions”. “Besides, we are more vulnerable to climate change and natural disasters given the high concentration of people”. He also pointed out “how important it is to foster these initiatives, as well as signing the pre-contract that will exemplify our commitment with such an urgent challenge as climate neutrality”.

Mission València Neutral City

Mayor Joan Ribó also praised the work that is being carried out through the Missions València 2030 initiative. “We put innovation in the service of the fight against climate change in order to promote the energy transition and to move towards a new model for a resilient, healthy and sustainable city”. In this sense, Mayor Ribó mentioned that the City Council, with the support of the València Climate and Energy Foundation and the Las Naves Innovation Centre, has launched an international call for projects focusing on the València Neutral City mission, with a budget of €100,000 obtained last year given that València was among the 6 finalists at the European Capital of Innovation competition.

The first València Neutral City mission, within the framework of the Mission València 2030 innovation strategy, aims at achieving climate neutrality in 3 neighbourhoods or districts by 2030, as proposed by the European Commission within the project of having 100 European cities willing to accept the challenge of transitioning towards decarbonisation.

“València wants to be part of those 100 cities that will be the spearhead in the fight against climate change in Europe”, according to the Mayo, who also stated that “the Mission València Neutral City is within the model of city promoted by our local government, as reflected in the urban strategy València 2030”.
